Discussions on the legal status of the Caspian sea has started today

The summit of defining the legal status of Caspian sea was held in Baku. The main goal of the summit is preparing convention about the legal status of Caspian sea by the Caspian littoral states. Participants from USA, China, GB, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Russia and Azerbaijan attended the seminar. 

There were two main topics of today’s summit: The process of demarcation of Caspian sea and security issues in the Caspian Sea.


First of all the sides discussed about the name of Caspian sea: lake or sea? During the talks, representatives from Turkmenistan and Iran stressed the importance of the recognition of the Caspian Sea as a lake, while the EU and US representatives were in favor of the name of the Caspian Sea. Russian officials said at the summit that recognition of the Caspian sea as a lake is important for security in the region. Thus, the recognition of Caspian as a sea, make a legal basis for the intervention of another country on the Caspian Sea. It is not good for the security of this region. Officials from China said that Caspian is a sea. Azerbaijan’s officials also said that Caspian as an international sea, and they support investments, expressed here. The representative of Kazakhstan also supported the position of Azerbaijan and noted: "If we give the status of the Caspian sea, the future investment by western companies in the basin can be called into question. According to the summit on dividing the Caspian Sea, The Caspian sea is advisable with the principle of separation of the middle line. Till resolving the status of Caspian, there would be conditions of using national resources by the Caspian littoral states. The process of using ballistic missiles by Russia out of the Caspian also has been the subject of discussion. Position of Russia according to this: "We do not have air strikes in support of Bashar al-Assad, it is for preventing terrorism. At the end of the meeting in connection with the name of Caspian, there was a voting. The result of the first vote: Caspian was adopted as an unlikal sea. The next meeting about the legal status of the Caspian sea will be at the 2nd Summit on December 3.
